My name is René Wittwer

I was born in Gwatt near Thun in 1964.

Since we lived close to the lake, I was always drawn to the water in my free time. My brother and I assembled rafts and so a large part of our youth played out in close contact with this element.

At the age of 14, a boy's dream came true and I was allowed to do a trial apprenticeship on a Rhine ship. It was tough but I liked it a lot. In April 1980 I started my apprenticeship as a seaman on the Rhine. After 3 years I completed it, and then drove another 4 years as a sailor and helmsman on the tankers Opalin and Almandine as a replacement.

Even when I was a skipper, I was drawn into the distance. I traveled around Canada by car for 6 months with a sailor buddy in 1985.

On the next trip, in 1987, I went to Australia for 7 months and then back through Asia.

I really wanted to take a train ride on it. This trip took me from Gwatt by train to Shanghai with several stops. I then traveled by boat and bus to Hong Kong.

Then I stayed in the Philippines for 2 months. Since I actually wanted to go to Tibet, I traveled to Kathmandu in Nepal. Unfortunately, Tibet was closed to tourists at the time. So I walked around the Himalayas with a Sherpa and two porters.

The next trip, in 1991, took me through 11 countries by moped, rubber dinghy and trailer. After this groundbreaking journey for my current project, which lasted 6 months, I returned home safe and sound.

After that time of traveling around, I wanted to look for a wife, raise a family, and settle down. After 7 years I found my wife and shortly afterwards our twin girls were born. Today they are grown up and we live safe and sound in our house in Gwatt where I grew up.

I have been working on a new travel project for several years. Traveling the world again by land and water is my concern.
